Michaela Honcova won first title of season in Porto

Slovakia’s Michaela Honcova survived epic final match to win the women’s 15.000 USD circuit crown at the Clube de Ténis do Porto in Portugal on Sunday.

With both finalists looking for first title of the year, Honcova defeated Frenchwoman Sara Cakarevic 57 61 75 in 2 hours and 11 minutes to collect the 5th ITF Pro Circuit singles title of her career.

The first set saw some intense battles on court, before Cakarevic took the initative. Honcova reeled off six of seven games to secure the second set in a little over 30 minutes.

After two contrasting sets of tennis, Honcova again pocketed an early break to lead 2-0, only to again see Cakarevic respond in the sixth game to get the set back on serve at 3-3. The final set was a tense affair, until Honcova grabbed a decisive break at 6-5 and appeared poised to claim the win. She came through to serve out the match a short time later.

The title was particularly important for the 24-year-old Honcova, whose last triumph on the ITF Circuit came in Essen in June 2013. “I am very happy to win this close final against very solid opponent. I have seen her to play last weeks and also this week she played very well in every single match.” said Honcova.

The title from Porto should secure a return to TOP 300 for Honcova. On behalf of our team, we would like to congratulate her and wish her best of luck for upcoming tournaments.
