The World No. 1 Simona Halep ended her quest for a maiden Grand Slam title in style, but she was not the only Romanian tennis player who shined in Paris this year.
Irina Maria Bara made her Roland Garros debut this year and it was an amazing experience for her. In singles, Bara lost to American Caroline Dolehide in the final round of qualifying. Despite the loss she achieved her best result ever at a Grand Slam.
In doubles, the unseeded Romanian pair of Irina Maria Bara and Mihaela Buzarnescu made her major main draw debut, and powered to quarterfinal.
The Romanian tandem has beaten three consecutive TOP 100 doubles teams this fortnight, adding Vania King and Jennifer Brady to the scalps of Xenia Knoll and Anna Smith, and No.4 seeds Latisha Chan and Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
In the quarterfinals, Bara and Buzarnescu have been close to upset the No.8 seeds Hao-Ching Chan and Zhaoxuan Yang, but Asian duo booked their spot into the semifinals with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory.
With 430 points she has secured her spot into TOP100 WTA Doubles Ranking. Irina-Maria has reached 71st position, her new career best.
“I want to say it was one of the best weeks of my life, playing great tennis and being around the best players in the world. It’s always a good motivation to see them and to train with them, it makes you believe that you can do it also and you are not far. It’s disappointing to lose in the quarterfinals being so close, but me and my partner are very happy with the result and we hope in the future we will have the chance to do it again.” Bara said after the tournament.
For young Romanian it is definitely a tournament to remember. Incredible major main draw debut. On behalf of our company we congratulate her on this amazing result! Bravo Irina Maria!
